Currywurst, Really not the Wurst

Rivers at the Asian Deli with her Bubble Tea
It was early when we arrived in Berlin. We got off the plane and waited for our luggage.  When  we got out of the airport - a cool blast of air hit me.  It was a little colder in Berlin than it was in Vienna!  I shivered and we were getting all of the cold weather at once.  At least it was going to be warmer in Paris - I hoped.  We went to a bus stop and thank goodness the bus came fast.  We got in the bus and chose some seats and sat down.  It seemed like we rode on the bus for a long time.  We got off the bus and looked at some signs that said where the metro station was.

We found the metro and to my surprise there were little drawings on the metro window of the Brandenburg gate and hanging from pegs were magazines and books.  But no one bothered to look at the magazines.  The metro looked a lot different from the other cities I had visited.  When we got out of the metro station it felt a little warmer.  I did not take off my jacket though.  We walked until we saw a sign announcing the hotel’s name.  We entered and checked in.  We went up to our room and mommy settled in as I explored the room and bathroom.  The bathroom was tiny and the shower was very small.  I found a candy by the bed and popped it in my mouth.  We then took a nap.

After we woke up from our nap we went to the metro station.  We were going to one of the worlds biggest department stores.  But when when we went there to our great disappointment it was closed - they are closed on Sundays.  We walked back to the metro station and then decided to go to the Berlin Wall.  It was the wall that separated the city into two halves (the Communist side and the American sector).  But before that we went to get something to eat.  We settled on an Asian deli and got some noodles and one of my favorite drinks  - Bubble tea.

Rivers and Grandma at the Brandenburg Gate
We got on the metro and got off a few stations later and walked out.  The first thing I noticed was that there was a large pink pipe running above our heads.  I stared down at my feet and saw a line running across the road and as long as I could see.  Mommy said that was where the wall ran.  We walked until we saw the remains of the wall. There were doodles and gum all over the wall.  Stands were planted around the wall with men dressed like police officers and they had stamps on a table with them. We took some pictures and walked on following the line around. We found the Brandenburg gate and a man at one of those stands gave me a postcard with all sorts of German stamps, a bookmark and one of those things that say that you can cross the border.

After taking pictures we went to the metro station so we could head back to the hotel. I was sleepy on the metro but I did not go to sleep. I trudged up to the room and settled on the bed. Grandma went to sleep but me and mommy turned on an Adele concert and we were singing along the entire night.

The next morning we slept in a little. We went to the market and then across the street to eat breakfast. I got a berry strudel with sugar coating on top. Mommy got an apple strudel and grandma got a croissant . After our delicious meal we went to see Checkpoint Charlie. We walked around buying some souvenirs. And then we went to a McDonalds.  It was pretty much like any other McDonalds except that they sell bubble tea at the cafe.

Rivers at the Berliner Dome
After taking some pictures around Checkpoint Charlie we went to Alexander Platz. We bought hot dogs and mommy bought some currywurst. Currywurst is a sausage with tomato sauce and curry powder. I didn’t like it but Mommy and Grandma loved it.  We looked at the many items that the vendors sold. We went in a large store at the side of Alexanderplatz and bought me an outfit. After all, the fashion there is very different.

We then went to the Berliner dome and then we went to the museum island. We took lots of pictures at both plaace. The buildings were pretty. We went to a fountain called Berlin’s Tiergarten.  We then went to the metro and went back to the big department store Ka de wi. We looked around and I played with some puppets but then we went back to the Brandenburg gate.

Mommy and Grandma at the Reichstag -
home to the German Parliament

After the long metro ride we went back to the hotel to get some sleep.  The next morning we went to go see the Reichstag Building home to the German Parliament. Then we went back to the place where we got our breakfast. Mommy and Grandma had some fish and they thought it was delicious.  Even food critic Anthony Bourdain had been there and said it was the meal he had in Berlin.   We went to the airport as we did not want to miss the plane to Paris.

Berlin was great and I liked the breakfast place across the street because their strudels were so delicious.   I also liked the department stores because many of the outfits were fashionable yet different and modern.   But I looked forward to the warmer weather in Paris.

As Principal of your school, I was so very excited to read that one of our students would be documenting their travels aboard during the summer months. I was able to spend the month of July with my family in the Boston area, and upon arriving home recently, I couldn't wait to read about your trip to Europe with your mom! I enjoyed not only reading about the many wonderful experiences you had, but also that your grandmother went with you as well.

You are an amazing student, Rivers, and I am proud to call you one of my students!

    Love,
    Mrs. Babine

Mrs. Babine, thanks so much for following my blog. I tried to learn as much as I could about Europe and I look forward to starting school and the third grade.
